Seven spanish autonomous communities failed in natural-protecction programmes

Next 21th of May we celebrate the European Natura 2000 Day, and WWF´s organization has provided a ranking about the development in autonomous community eco-management.

The ´Naturómetro 2016´ report analyzes the content of 312 eco-management plans of the network of protected areas Natura 2000 in Spain, and that report warns of failures in the European rules: in general terms, that rules are not strategically operative enough and they are under-financed.

Galicia, Andalucía, Cantabria y Madrid rank the forth last positions. País Vasco, Baleares, Comunidad Valenciana y La Rioja are in the top. Asturias is in a warning situation, with insufficient plans which fail in the definition of objectives about habitat and species conservation, and non-specific measures without an estimated budget.

WWF recognizes the progress in approving almost 60% of Natura 2000 eco-management plans, but also denounces that 700 Natura 2000 spaces have no protection plan. The European Commission is going to penalize Spain with an economic sanction because of breaching the protection programmes.

WWF launched a call to “Turn Up the Volume of Nature

This initiative spreads all across Europe inviting people to reconnect with the sounds of nature creating their own animal song, asking politicians to respect, improve and take action to ensure the protection of many natural habitats and species that are still under threat.

Today, in the International Recycling Day, we have known that Seseña tire dump fire is under control, but it would take a few days more to stop the fire definitely.

On May 17th we celebrate the International Day for Recycling as an opportunity to redirect the behavior of all citizens about this easy tool to help and improve our planet.

Today, we have to regret the fifth day since a fire began in the biggest tire dump in Europe, between Seseña and Valdemoro.

Authorities are still trying to determine the cause of the blaze, but are increasingly thinking that it might have been deliberate.  The fire started in three different points, even though it was raining hours before and even in high humidity environment. Considering the speed of the flames at that moment, they suspect that the author used some heavy fuel. The tire dump only had security from Monday to Friday 8:00 to 16:00h, since February.

Soltécnica Renovables Group has estimated that with the adequate recycling system, it is possible to obtain per ton “410 kg of fuel, 500 kg of carbon black and 130 kg of high quality steel” from tires, and it would produce 80 millions of euros of benefits.

Around 50,000 tons of tires have been burned: 63% of the global number of tires in the cemetery. This figure is equivalent to the total amount of tires dropped to recycling in Spain through three months.

On May 5, we attended the simulacrum of implementation of the Inland Maritime Plan of the Port of Avilés, in which Inteco Astur proceeded to deploy the necessary means to limit, contain and eliminate a spill of sulfuric acid from a source of discharge which, In the first phase of the exercise, the elimination of the contaminating source was simulated by means of an adequate obturation.

After the work of containment on land, a marine containment barrier was demarcated, limiting the area potentially at risk that could be contaminated, in order to prevent possible damage to the port water sheet. All this with the proper control of the area to avoid damages to the people who, there, could transit.

Simulacro Inteco Astur - Puerto de AvilésFrom the previous narrative we could interpret that the response to an incident of this nature begins and ends with the intervention of a single intervention group before the incident. Nothing is further from reality. The current complexity of technological processes with the capacity to generate emergencies involves the participation of numerous specialists, among which we can highlight the operators of dangerous goods pier and the safety advisers of the merchandise freight to give an example.

Likewise, the National Response System for Marine Pollution (SNRCM) implies

International Migratory Bird Day

This year topic is focused in the slaughter, the capture and the illegal trade of the birds.

The International Migratory Bird Day is celebrated every year the second weekend of May. That date was established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), for the purpose of bringing awareness on conserving migratory birds and their habitats.

The main reason why the birds are moving is to feed themselves, due to the food is not always available at the same place depending on the weather conditions.

This year the International Migratory Bird Day’s topic is focused in the slaughter, the capture and the illegal trade of the birds. Millions of migratory birds are killed every year by human actions before reaching their breeding or hibernation place. Is an especially serious problem the illegal hunting of this traveler birds, above all in the Mediterranean Basin. In Spain, close to five million of migratory birds die because of this. Opening fire on birds in their migratory travel is absolutely untenable: at that moment, the group has suffered several deaths after two migration trips and the winter.

Also, migratory birds are facing the climate changes and the global warming, what has caused important changes in the migration strategies; light pollution; human infrastructures and air and water contamination. Another worrying issue is the mass expansion of different ways of generating and distributing electricity: crashes and electrocutions to power lines, and infrastructural energetic barriers are a death and a moving cause.

Birds are victims of damaging effects of the degradation and the lost of their habitats, and other disorders as a result of a mass deployment in hydroelectric power plants, bioenergy, ocean, solar, wind power, and geothermal energy.
